BART Intermodal Station, Union City, CA
ROMA undertook a series of projects centered on the transformation of the outdated original Union City BART Station into a modern intermodal facility, reconfiguring pedestrian and vehicular circulation to firmly integrate station area with adjacent neighborhoods and creating a focus for the new transit oriented community. Based on the ROMA prepared architectural master plan, BART station has been reconfigured to provide double-sided access and create an even more significant transit hub which serves to create a strong identity and focus for the emerging mixed-use downtown, a flexible framework of amenable streets and city blocks that support development integrated with transit, the close intertie between transit modes to facilitate transfer and the creation of a first phase open space and community facilities that became a positive front to transit.
The new Intermodal Station serves BART, AC Transit, Union City Transit, private buses and local shuttle and paratransit buses as well as future Capitol Corridor and Dumbarton Rail connections. Site improvements include a new 16-bay bus facility with 800 foot long photovoltaic transit canopy, pedestrian and bicycle improvements and associated streets, public spaces and parking lots configured to facilitate the potential for future development.
Vertical and horizontal circulation within the BART Station has been reorganized to allow for the new double-sided access with the new central free pedestrian passage, new escalators, new glass elevators, monumental stairs and high bay full height glazed lobbies. Improvements also included expansion of the platform areas, construction of emergency exiting facilities, new station signage and furnishings and updates to all station systems and finishes. New staff lounge as well as a driver’s lounge for associated bus service and a number of other supporting facilities have been constructed. Project also included extensive landscape improvements to the BART berm and throughout the site.
