Viaduct Harbour- America's Cup Village, Auckland, New Zealand
ROMA Design Group prepared a master plan for the development of Viaduct Harbour for the 2000 America’s Cup championship. The intention of the City and its private developer partner was to create an attractive venue for the America’s Cup while providing for the redevelopment of this maritime industrial area. ROMA’s plan called for the creation of a mixed-use waterfront district with commerical-recreational uses and upper level housing and office oriented to a network of waterfront promenades and public open spaces. The plan also provided for the improvement of the harbor as a protected staging area for the America’s Cup syndicates with a central island where America’s Cup ceremonies and events were staged. The project extended the fabric of the downtown to the water’s edge, providing Auckland with its first people-oriented waterfront destination. Development has resulted in 1,000 residential units and 200,000 square feet of retail space. The 6,000 square meter Viaduct Events Centre was constructed for waterside exhibition and conventions and plans for further redevelopment to the west in Wynyard Quarter.
